As a visual artist, I have long been fascinated by painted colours on different materials and in different spaces, because I believe colours and coloured painting can evolve in a new form of painting through the relationships with materials and spaces. To be specific, I have been intensively interested in physical phenomena of different colours on various materials and dimensions. I have not portrayed and illustrated things in my practical works, but focused on creating phenomenological illusion through materiality of my painting materials and spatiality of my painted objects and exhibition space. Based on my interest in materiality and spatiality, from a stretcher frame to out of the wall and gallery spaces, I have contemplated ‘What is contemporary painting?’, ‘What can make a category of painting?’ and ‘How can I expand the forms and concepts of contemporary painting using materiality and spatiality?’

시각예술가로서 나는 오랫동안 여러 가지 재료들과 다양한 공간에 페인팅 되어 있는 색들에 매료되어왔다. 그것은 나는 색채들과 색채의 조합인 페인팅은 재료와 공간들과의 관계들을 통해서 새로운 형태의 페인팅으로 진화할 수 있다고 믿기 때문이다. 자세히 말하면, 나는 다채로운 색채들이 다양한 재료들과 크기들 위에 물리적으로 펼쳐진 현상들에 매우 관심이 있어왔다. 나는 페인팅에 있어서 구상적인 요소를 묘사하거나 주제를 설명하는 작업보다는 현상적이고 물질적인 화면들 혹은 환상들을 만드는데 주력해왔다. 그리고 그것은 나의 페인팅 재료들의 물질성과 페인팅 된 물체의 공간성, 전시공간과의 관계를 통한 것이다. 나아가 나는 나의 전시가 각각의 페인팅들의 관계 그리고 전시공간과의 관계로 인해 하나의 작품으로 보여 지길 관객들에게 제안한다. 공간성과 물질성을 바탕으로 전통적인 스트레쳐 프레임 된 페인팅부터 갤러리 공간과 벽을 벗어나는 것까지 나는 숙고해왔다. ‘무엇이 현대 페인팅인가?’,‘어떠한 것들이 페인팅이라는 정의 또는 규정을 만드는가?’ 그리고 그 전통적이고 보편적인 페인팅의 경계를 넘어서고자, 어떻게 물질성과 공간성을 이용하여 페인팅의 또 다른 형식과 컨셉을 확장시킬 수 있을 것인가에 대해서 나는 계속해서 숙고하고 연구할 것이다.
